Frequently Asked Questions

 Do I need a partner?

  • No! - You don't need to bring a partner. Private lessons are for up to 2 people so you are welcome to bring a partner if you want, or just bring yourself and dance with your instructor. In group classes we rotate partners so everyone is included.

What should I bring to my lesson or class?

  • Shoes -  A clean pair of shoes to change into will help protect the floor and keep you comfortable.
  • Water bottle - Dance is great exercise! Don't forget to stay hydrated!
  • Comfortable clothes -  We don't have a dress code but you will want to wear something you can move in easily. Some students enjoy the chance to dress up and some will be in athletic wear or casual clothes.
  • Notebook or phone/camera - Not required but you might appreciate having this if you are a notetaker.

Do I need to buy dance shoes?

  • No! - You don't need to buy dance shoes right away. The only real requirement is clean shoes that won't scratch the floor or track in dirt, snow, or salt. we recommend shoes that are secure to your foot so they don't fall off or slide around. Shoes with non-rubber soles are good because rubber can create too much traction and make turns more difficult. Leather soled dress shoes are a good option for men and ballet flats are a good option for ladies. When you are ready to buy dance shoes look for shoes that have a suede sole. Ask your instructor if you would like recommendations.

What if I have no rhythm?

  • Rhythm can be learned! - Natural talent will not help you nearly as much good instruction and consistent practice will. Dance is for everyone and it is a skill that can be learned.

How will I know if classes are cancelled?

  • We will tell you! - Check the calendar or Facebook page for cancelations due to bad weather or other emergencies. We will also do our best to contact everyone individually in case of a cancelation.

What dances do you teach?

  • We teach American Smooth & Rhythm and International Standard & Latin styles. We also teach many of the Club and Country dances including Hustle, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, West Coast Swing, and Night Club 2 Step.
  • The American Style dances include Smooth (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, & Viennese Waltz), and Rhythm (Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Bolero, & Mambo) They are some of the most popular for social dancing in the Midwest and also well represented at competitions in the United States.
  • The International Style dances include Standard (Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, & Quickstep), and Latin (Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, & Jive) These dances are more often done at competitions than social dances in the Midwest.

I have a wedding coming up. How soon do I need to start lessons?

  • Today! - We recommend starting at least 3 or 4 months in advance if you want to do a choreographed routine with a music edit. Of course the earlier you start the better. Starting early will give you more time to learn and feel confident so you can focus on enjoying the moment.

My wedding is next week. Is it too late for dance lessons?

  • Not at all! - There are still options even if you waited until the last minute. We can give you some simple patterns to use with your song and some techniques to help you feel more comfortable moving together without looking awkward.
